Yesterday, in an effort to help us learn our way around the Capitol, my supervisor sent the other two Science Committee interns and me on a scavenger hunt. This was no ordinary scavenger hunt-- it took us four hours to complete and had us visit just about every floor of all the House buildings, plus the Capitol itself.
We started off on the House side, where we had to find places to get ice cream, ask for our representatives' cards, visit every Democratic member of the Science Committee, and find a couple hearing rooms. It was amazing when we'd turn the corner and come across an office belonging Paul Ryan, for example.
Then we took the little train to the Capitol, and the fun really began! Normally people aren't allowed to walk around the building without an escort, but with our intern badges we count as staff so we can go pretty much anywhere. We wandered around for hours, tracking down statues and points of interest-- we visited the old Senate chamber, the old Supreme Courtroom, and even the Speaker's office. We also got to stand on the Speaker's balcony and walk on the steps that the President does before the inauguration! It's just amazing to me that I'm allowed to enter these buildings and go wherever I like-- and super exciting!
